Practical tips and strategies for leading technical teams

Five ways that you, as a leader, can earn the trust of your technical team members

Leading technical teams is HARD!! Here are five actions that will help you earn the trust of your team members.

(1) Always be transparent and communicate clearly: Technical team members appreciate clear and precise communication. Be transparent and authentic. Provide regular updates and be open to feedback. Have a strategic goal for your team and communicate it regularly. Praise team members achievements regularly and publicly;

(2) Show expertise and knowledge: Technical team members respect leaders who have technical expertise and can provide guidance and insight. Demonstrate your knowledge and experience to build trust with your team. But you don’t need to have all the answers. And don’t fake it – that will be discovered instantly!

(3) Empower your team: Technical team members want to feel that their contributions are valued and that they have the autonomy to make decisions. Empower your team members to take ownership of their work and provide them with the resources they need to succeed. Most importantly, if your team makes the wrong decision then, as a leader, you must take the responsibility. If not, your team members will never feel safe or empowered;

(4) Be consistent: Technical team members appreciate consistency in leadership. This means being consistent in decision-making, communication, and expectations. Consistency builds trust and helps your team members feel secure in their roles;

(5) Foster a culture of learning: Technical team members value continuous learning and development. Foster a culture of learning within your team by providing training opportunities and encouraging experimentation and innovation. Invest in training resources and certifications so your team members continually grow and develop;

By implementing these strategies, you can build trust with your technical team members and create a positive and productive work environment. Remember, trust is earned through consistent actions and a commitment to the team’s success.
